Pigmentation
What is pigmentation?
Pigmentation refers to the appearance of the skin, and hyperpigmentation is when it becomes a skin concern and there are areas or patches on the skin that appear darker. Hyper pigmented areas can occur in different ways on the skin whether that’s as small patches or covering the entire body, it really does depend on the cause and the skin type. The term pigmentation can cover a whole host of skin concerns including: age spots, birthmarks, melasma, hyperpigmentation and pregnancy. Whilst pigmented areas in some form are common amongst many people, it can in some cases cause people to become self conscious and unhappy with the appearance of their skin.
What causes pigmentation?
When skin cells become damaged or deteriorate extra melanin is produced to protect the skin which can result in areas of pigmentation. The natural ageing process can contribute to the cause of pigmentation as well as other factors including:
- Exposure to the sun & harmful UV rays
- Skin damage
- An imbalance of hormones
- Side effects of medication
- Acne & other skin concerns
The biggest and most common cause however does come from sun damage and the more someone is exposed to the sun without protection the greater their risk is of their skin becoming hyper pigmented.
