Ingrown Hairs
What is an ingrown hair?
An ingrown hair refers to a hair follicle that has been previously cut and has begun to grow back within the skin. Ingrown hairs are something that can effect anyone, however they are more common in people with coarse or naturally curly hair. They can develop in any area of the body, however they are most noticeable in areas where you frequently shave including: beard, legs, pubic area, and armpits. Whilst they are typically harmless and go away on their own, they can become inflamed causing discomfort. In some cases the ingrown hair can even cause an infection know as folliculitis where the hair follicle becomes infected and inflamed.
What causes ingrown hairs?
There are two main causes of ingrown hairs. The first one is cutting the hair causing it to retract back into the hair follicle and grow into the skin. The second cause is when the hair follicle becomes clogged with dead skin causing the hair to regrow under the skin.
Whilst ingrown hairs are extremely common there are some things you might be able to do to prevent them or reduce the risk of them occurring at home including:
- Using warm water & a mild cleanser as part of your shave routine
- Exfoliate the skin before shaving
- Using a single blade or electric razor
- Shave in the direction of hair growth
It can be hard to completely reduce the risk of ingrown hairs occurring with at home methods, hence why people look into professional treatments for a more seamless hair removal process.
